Write What You WANT to Know! - Workshop
Designed for grades 6-8 OVERVIEW: In this writing workshop, Wendy will share her research process for her fiction series, Somewhere In-Between. She will explain the importance not only about writing what you know, but the value of writing what you want to learn about as well. Using Google search, Wendy will share how fun research can be when it's something that really interests you. Using her new hometown of Amherst, Ohio as an example, she will share how researching this unassuming small town helped her come up with new ideas for her book. During this virtual workshop, participants will have the opportunity to brainstorm ideas of what they would like to know more about, and how these curiosities can help them develop their own stories. |
The Couch Potato Creative Writer Workshop
Designed for grades 7-9 / 10-12 (will target either grade range) OVERVIEW: In this fun writing workshop, Wendy will share how being a film and TV buff inspired her to write page-turning stories, engaging characters, and cliffhanger chapter endings. Using her novel series, Somewhere In-Between, she will take readers through a series of exercises to create their own stories using their favorite films and film characters as inspiration. |
"Book Buddies" Editing Workshop
Designed for grades 8-12 OVERVIEW: Using her experience working with her own editor, Wendy will take participants through the process of what happens when an author works together with an editor to take the story from "rough" to "finished," using her latest YA book, Fighting the Darkness, as an example. Wendy will also share about her first experience reading her stories aloud with sweaty palms, shaking hands and trembling voice. It can be a scary thing to share your writing with someone else, let alone a critique group. She will take the group through the guidelines of how to helpfully and supportively critique another person's writing, as well as tips on what to look out for in your own writing if editing your own work. |
